Journalists succeed at State
Seven Millard West journalism students were invited to and competed at State on Monday, May 10th. The contest was held at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Five yearbook designers and two newspaper writers, the Pawprint’s senior Luke Emery and sophomore Sarah Vogel, attended.
“We went for yearbook feature writing, yearbook theme copy writing, news feature photography, and yearbook theme development,” said Mark Hilburn, advisor of the yearbook staff.
Newspaper writers competed for entertainment writing and photo editing.
Hilburn described the bus ride to UNL: “It was very cold and rainy… It was early.”
Senior Josi Orsi competed for news feature photography. She had one hour to “go out and take whatever pictures she wanted to.” She then edited and submitted her three best photos. Orsi, along with seniors Cassie Boston and Liz Brown placed 3rd for yearbook theme development. Senior Lindsay McCoy placed third in yearbook feature writing. Writers were given prompts and limited time to respond.
Emery placed fifth for photo illustration at State, and first in the district.
“Overall we placed fifth in Class A1,” said Hilburn. “I think that the students did very well.”
“I was excited for all the girls that went because it was my first time going as well,” said Hilburn. He had the opportunity to attend state last year with Millard South, but chose to wait until he had his own staff.
