Summary
The Union Pacific Railroad is the largest railroad in North America. It covers 23 states. In 1863 President Lincoln chose Omaha as the starting place for the Union Pacific. It would build west and join the Central Pacific in Utah. Then our country would have a railroad from the Atlantic to the Pacific. It was finished in 1869. Today, the railroad carries many kinds of freight such as coal, chemicals, grain, lumber, cars, and food products. The Harriman Dispatching Center opened in 1989. It is a command center that directs the train traffic for the Union Pacific.
