bage Patch dolls were just some of the
new fads for the year. Electric blue,
florescent orange, yellow and hot pink
blinded many eyes in the halls and
classrooms because of the fad of wearing
such dazzling day-glow colors. Mainly girls
wore these extra-bright colors, although
some boys did join the fad. As one junior
girl explained, "It added a different touch
to what I wore."
A fad just for girls was wearing long
and really wild looking earrings. Crystals of

ears. Other popular designs on earrings
Hair tails too were popular for both
boys and girls which showed a more
new-wave look. A hair tail was a lock of
hair which was kept longer than the rest of
the hair. Also popular for girls were bobs,
a short even cut inspired by the look of the
20's. However, for a more punk look,
uneven cuts were seen.
The most popular toy of the year were
Cabbage Patch dolls, which were first seen
late last year. These dolls were in big
demand. Adults fought like children trying
to buy them before Christmas, many being
put on waiting lists for months before
getting a doll. Some people bought dolls
and sold them for a good profit to
desperate parents, while others built up
collections.
What made Cabbage Patch dolls so
unique was that they were computer
designed so no two dolls look exactly alike;
they even come with adoption papers.
Their influence spread to folders, wall-
paper, bed sheets, and even baby diapers.
Games too gained national popularity
during the year. A game by two Canadians
called Trivial Pursuit was the most popular.
For this you had to answer questions on
mainly unknown facts. People of all ages
could be seen playing this game at parties
or at home, during extra minutes before
class, in school, lounges, and even before
Nebraska football games.
