                                                                               As a conservative Republican, I feel
                                                                        the people of this nation should be self-suffi-
                                                                        cient.  The government exists to  deal  with
                                                                        foreign entities and to form general economic
                                                                        guidelines.  We do too little to help the poor
                                                              and  unemployed  become  self-sustaining;  instead,  the
                                                              government hands them  money.  The  present welfare
                                                              system does not encourage the poor to reach  self-suffi-
                                                              ciency.  With  a  market economy, competition and  indi-
                                                              vidual effort should be able to propel the economy, rather
                                                              than turning to the government for quick fixes.  The nation
                                                              is  facing a decay of family and  national values.  We need
                                                              to provide good examples for the country's youth to emu-
                                                              late: respect for others, a strong family unit, and pride in the
                                                              country.
