As a conservative Republican, I feel
the people of this nation should be self-suffi-
cient. The government exists to deal with
foreign entities and to form general economic
guidelines. We do too little to help the poor
and unemployed become self-sustaining; instead, the
government hands them money. The present welfare
system does not encourage the poor to reach self-suffi-
ciency. With a market economy, competition and indi-
vidual effort should be able to propel the economy, rather
than turning to the government for quick fixes. The nation
is facing a decay of family and national values. We need
to provide good examples for the country's youth to emu-
late: respect for others, a strong family unit, and pride in the
country.
