Gazing through a
fence at the now-empty
Jewish Community
Center pool is sopho-
more Jennifer Rifkin.
She, along with many
others, habitually
rushed to the pool on its
opening day, Memorial
Day. However, this
year would be different;
because of the new
school calendar,
students would be
studying for finals, not
trekking to swimming
pools, on Memorial Day.

The new calendar was
a GIVE & TAKE
I e[:] 't like having to give
situation, though; it had
' up svmmer break before junior Sara Stewart puts
its benefits alongside
the drawbacks. Here,
Memorial Day and having
in time as a sacker at
HyVee, a job wh ich she
to go to school into June
started in July. Since
the new calendar
because June feels like lengthened the summer
by two weeks, students
it's summer to me, and had extra days to work
without worrying about
we 'II still be in school for a the stresses of school
week or so then! and homework, too.
Many students who
worked full-time in the
--sophomore Ja nelle ' summer also had the
Ruswick opportunity to make two
weeks' additional full-
time pay. photo by
