France! Germany! Ireland! Ever think of
spending your summer in one of these places?
For three students, it was spent packing for
their summer getaways to places a few miles
farther away than grandma's house.
Through school organizations, students
received the opportunity of teaming up with
the German American Society in Omaha and
went to Germany in June.
"I went to Braunschweig, Germany and
stayed with my friend Niko and his family in
Shandelah, a village outside of Braunschweig.
I went with a group of about four from our
school, but we were sponsored by the German
American Society. It was fun going there
because Omaha and Braunshweig are sister
cities, and there were a lot of similarities,"
junior Chris Mansfield said.
Mansfield also experienced German customs stewardists and pilots had green suits on. Even
on hi s trip, such as dinner table manners.
"It was cool whenever we ate because the
people would always say 'guten appetit' at the
table before they would start eating. I'm not
really sure what it means, but I said it with
them anyway," Mansfield said.

By the way, 'guten appetit' means enjoy
your meal!
"I met so many cool people, and I plan on
visiting back in the near future," Mansfield
said.
For other students, traveling overseas was
about spending time with family. Sophomore
Lauren Case went to southern Ireland.
"My sister, Jessie, is going to college this
year, and my parents wanted a nice vacation
before they sent her off," Case said.
One of her favorite activities was the tour
around the city of Dublin.
"We went to the Guinness Factory and the
top floor was called 'Gravity' and had a
360°view of the Dublin. It was bodacious."
Case also said the airline, Aer Lingus, was
neat "because all the seats were green and the
the plane was green."
Because of these experiences, student
travelers saw the summer as an opportunity to
go beyond their regular classroom knowledge
and expand their minds through their own
expenences.
