The wide variety of creative classes allowed students to practice and perfect a variety of
techniques and explore different outlets for personal expression.
Cooking, sewing, and art encouraged students to expl ore different opportunities
and create maste rpieces through a variety of mediums.
Art and Culinary classes all owed students to escape from regul ar class routines in
ord er to become more independent and construct projects unique to them.
"When you rea lly like art you ca n't control it, it's just so mething you feel. Th e
upper art classes let you draw what you want to draw. I ca n get praise for my work
and not have it be judged, " se ni or julie Shadlow sa id.
No matter what the medium for ex press ion, these classes gave students an inter-
active and hands-o n approach to lea rning.
"I took Pottery and got to take all my work home with me. Eve ryone in my class
~ was a lot of fun; I had a competition with a boy in my class to see who could make
the tall est coil pot. I definitely won," so phomore Heather Chuda sa id .
Far from her home country, se nior Cirkeline lowe, from Denmark, found a
pl ace at school where she could express herse lf. Along the way, she experi enced
the many differences in American cuisine.
"I lea rn ed how to make American food and saw how different it was than my
country's food. Here the food has much more fat and larger portions," Lowe sa id.
Man y of the classes also gave students th e opportunity to focus on their future
while lea rning different ways to depi ct th eir idea s.
" I want to create clothes when I am older, and with my individual study, I get
to lea rn how to design and create clothes by myse lf. I am even making my prom
dress this year," se ni or Mandy Elsasser sa id.
While some classes were required to graduate, many students took the opportu-
