Staff Welcomes
Room Change

T
ake a few box lids, add the
nearest girl's bathroom and what
do you get? A primitive jour-
nalism department trying to work with
advanced tools.
And that's the way it was at the
beginning of the year. Names were
suggested, picked over, discarded or
approved by the respective staffs.
The result was the Hoofbeat new-
spaper and the Stampede yearbook.
The entire first issue of the
Hoofbeat was layed out on box tops,
class pictures were sorted out on the
floor of room 233 and the lights in the
girl's restroom went off so photo-
graphers could develop their pictures.
Things finally started looking
brighter when the J-department
received its first light table.
But an omen seemed to be
following the department right
through the move into the "new
building". Shortly after settling down
into a new room, the light table was
broken, repaired and broken again.
Finally, in desperation plexiglass was
ordered in place of frosted.
In spite of the mishaps and
misfortunes, the J-department
produced award winning material. Jim
Everson won first place editorial
cartooning at UNO, and Karen Hiet-
brink won first place news event at
UNO and placed in the top ten in the
state for newswriting. Naomi Mitchell
was a sweepstake winner for layout
and among the top ten for state
layout. Lori Rubin placed third at state
for newswriting.
The climax for the J-department
came with the year end banquet at
Brother Sabastins . Quill and Scroll
members were initiated and other
pwards were presented.
