Forensics
Speak Easy
A lthough many people would not
. consider Debate and Forens ics a
sport, they were in a sense. Both
involved the student's hard work and
practice plus competitions with judges.
coaches and students from other area
schools.
It may have sounded easy but one
soon found that it was not. Forensics
involved two main types of speeches.
First, there were platform speeches
which were written and read by the
student. Then there were interpretation
speeches, which were just read by the
student, not written.
After bringing two trophies home
early in the season in December, advisor
Terry Peterson predicted a winning
season. "We had the talent, determina-
tion and skill to do well and we did."
This was proven by the team
winning the district title plus 26 trophies
throughout the whole season.
Debate involved a few different
things. Every year a subject is chosen for
debate teams across the country. This
year's topic was "Resolved: The federal
government should establish minimum
educational standards for elementary
and secondary schools ."
.... Countless hours were spent in the
libraries by debate students, as they had
to research their topic thoroughly.
According to senior MicheTie White,
"Research is the key to winning in
debate."
All the practice and research paid
off as the debate team had a very
successful season. Coach Linda Garvin
summed it all up by saying, "I'm pleased
with the success the debate team had.
