At Last
etting to State for the first time
G
was no easy task for the Lady
Mustangs, let alone facing rival
Millard South in first round play once
they got there.
For the girls it was a dream come
true, but joy soon turned to disappoint-
ment when they lost by six points 37-43.
However they took the lead for the first
three quarters due to the top scoring of
Senior Regina Kolc and strong defensive
play by Junior Elaine Banks, Senior Beth
Brown and Senior Joni Smith.
Fourth quarter, though, took its toll
on the Mustangs. Fouls and a two-minute
stall by South, who was already four
points ahead, made it impossible to catch
up, despite late baskets by Brown and
Junior Darla Wernimont.
"I felt our kids gave the best effort
we've given all season, but we came up a
little short," Coach Jeff Ritz said.
It was fourth quarter problems in the
last minute that lost the final game by
one point against Ralston in District play.
However a wild card still allowed the
Mustangs to go to state.
With a 16-5 season record Ritz felt,
"We worked up to maximum capability.
We achieved a lot over the whole season."
At Metro the team placed fourth and at
District runners up.
At the state basketball game against Millard
South, Senior Joni Smith (34) shoots for a basket
and scores.
