Being Cool
or Scared
F
reshmen essentially entered their new
world of high school petrified or calm and
collected .
One could tell who the petrified freshmen
were. They were always in their class on time,
- with even a few minutes to spare. They also were
terrified of the upperclassmen. In fact, these
petrified freshmen always avoided the 11-12
building if possible. They had an awful feeling that
if they entered this building they would be picked
on by some gigantic upperclassmen.
However, the calm, cool, and collected ones
were probably very nervous on the inside but
appeared very together on the outside. They
were even known to be tardy to class, on purpose,
at least once a week, to make the upperclassmen
think that they did not have a care in the world.
Of course, that only worked until they found out
every three tardies was a detention and nine was
a Saturday SchooL
Even though the two groups of freshmen
were different, they were still the same because
both groups wanted to succeed. For instance, the
petrified freshmen always tried to be the teach-
er's pet for fear that if they were not, they would
fail the class. On the oth~ hand, the calm, cool,
and collected freshmen did not care what the
teachers thought of them.
Whatever group individuals became a part
of, one thing was for certain. The class of '89
managed to get through the year with few
problems.
Some enjoyed it much more than being at
the top of the ladder in junior high . One freshmen
Freshman Carrie Bailey shows she has school spirit by stated, "I like being a freshman because I am
hanging decorations above the lockers for the hall-decorating
contest held during Spirit Week. (photo by S.Meese) finally treated with a little more respect than I was
in junior high."
