New Shifts
Vary Squads
C
hanging the squad formations made
cheerleading operate differently for the
Freshmen, JV, Varsity, and Wrestling
cheerleaders.
"This put less demands on the sponsor and
the cheerleader; it also helped to get to know the
girls better. It was always easier to get to know
eight girls better than 12 and 16 as in the past "
said Varsity sponsor June Morrissey.
The freshmen squad was increased from six
to nine cheerleaders and the sophomore squad
was eliminated altogether. JV boys and JV girls
squad each consisted of six girls. The varsity too
was split up with eight on both squads.
However, this arrangment was not liked by
all; one JV boys' cheerleader, Dawn Furey, said
she did not like the new squad organization
because "There was too much competition
between the girl and boy cheerleaders.
On the other hand, Dawn lnzaro, former
wrestling cheerleader, cheered for girls JV
because she got to cheer more. " I like the new
way of the squads because I am more involved
now " .
With all the new arrangments that did not
cut back on the hard work and dedication that
went into it. They spent many late hours after
school decorating, practicing, and making signs.
But when the squad got to cheer it was all worth
it.
