It is not many students who get the chance to be Swe-
dish for a day. However, Junior Crystine Landa, Senior
Lisa Rosenberg and Junior Kim Hahn got their chance at
the model United Nations held in October. (l. WING-

W
hether you were interested in cur-
rent events, human behavior, dif-
ferent reltgions or the law, the So-
cial Studies Department, through a wide vari-
ety of courses offered, was able to nurture
that interest with new and different teaching
methods.
One new method the department used to
teach students was through various computer
simulations. "We have incorporated more
computer simulations in a couple of courses,"
said Department Head Robin Wiar. World
affairs classes were able to participate in a for-
eign policy simulation in which war and terror-
ists attacks became common place. Civics
and consumerism classes participated in a
computer simulation that involved the budget
process on a federal level.
"Activities and simulations were better
than the lectures because they were more in-
teresting; because they were more interesting
you learned more," said Junior Chris Moore-
head. Many students agreed with this be-
cause they found lectures to be "stale and
uninteresting."
Also, political campaigns were created
and video taped by students in civics and con-
sumerism classes. "This tied in to the politi-
cal year with elections," Wiar said.
A more common way for students to learn
other than notes or lectures was class discus-
sions. "Class discussions were never boring
because everyone got to express their opi-
nions." said Senior Shawn Stokes.
Junior Michaela Hug added, "They en-
abled people to hear other students opinions."
Because of all the innovative teaching
methods used by the Social Studies Depart-
ment, classes were guaranteed not to be bor-
ing. Sophomore Amy Hinton said, "With all
the activities we were kept busy. Classes In this fourth hour development of America clas s,
were hardly ever dull." IN Sophomores Keith Maly and Richard Hopper work on

Even social studies class can be fun.especiaty
when the whole class can participate. Contributing to
their U.S. and the world class is Freshman Christine Bo-

Taking time to explain and discuss with a class

ics and consumerism class. (S. NICH )
