in Regionals
W hat is a cheerleader? Even
though this question usually was
not a major topic of discussion,
it probably crossed one's mind at least once.
Did it just mean being stereotyped, sell-
ing turkey-o-grams or jumping around with
pep and enthusiam, or was it more?
After tryouts were over and the uni-
forms were chosen, they went to camp.
There they got to know each other and
learned to work together as a team. Bring-
ing home ribbons and awards from camp
was just the beginning. All squads soon be-
gan to practice for competition and the pep
rallies.
Competition was just another part of
cheerleading. The squads practiced for
about four months before the regionals.
The boys varsity and JV squads came home
with a first place award. The varsity
squad was invited to attend the nationals in
Florida.
But being a cheerleader consisted of
more than just that. It was a lot of hard
work and dedication. (BV) Junior Amy
Robinson said, "It was a lot of fun and it
helped me to gain confidence. It was a lot
of work if you wanted to be good, but it was
worth it when I was out there cheering."
Being good took a true athlete. "For
instance, the boys varsity squad wanted to
be the best they could, and so they each set
a personal goal to achieve that, and they
did," said sponsor Connie Murphy.
Being accepted as a cheerleader was
determined by the student body. In a ran-
dom survey of 36 students, fifty percent
said they thought the cheerleaders were
"stuck-up."
The other fifty percent thought that
the cheerleaders had spirit.
