                                                                                    What did it take ta be a wrestler?
                                                                                        As coach Dan Craney said, " A wrestler   I
                                                                                    was a very unique person. He  was a team
                                                                                    player and a individualist. He wanted to win
                                                                                    for his  team, but he needed to win for him-
                                                                                    self ."
                                                                                        This  need to win  is  what drove the
                                                                                    wrestler to put himself  through what even
                                                                                    the coaches considered a torturous work-
                                                                                    out.
                                                                                        The  workout was designed to condi-
                                                                                    tion  the wrestler  anaerobicly,  that is,  al-
                                                                                    though the wrestler probably could not run
                                                                                    a marathon, he could go all  out for a gruel-
                                                                                    ing six  minutes.
                                                                                       The  wrestler began each workout with
                                                                                    a  15-minute  run,  two-thirds of which was a
                                                                                   sprint . Then  he stretched,  putting special
                                                                                   emphasis  on  the  neck.  Next,  he  went
                                                                                    through a series  of drills , and mock matches
                                                                                   designed to deprive the wrestler of oxy-
                                                                                   gen. The  workout which lasted an hour and
                                                                                   a  half ended in  more sprints.
                                                                                       In  wrestling,  however,  conditioning
                                                                                    was  not enough. The  wrestler also  main-
                                                                                   tained his  weight, so  2-3 days before the
                                                                                   match, the average caloric intake was
                                                                                   500-1000 calories. The average person's in-
                                                                                   take is  3500 .
                                                                                       Some  wrestlers  like  state champion
                                                                                   Brian Richmond went even further. His  calo-
                                                                                   ric  intake was  0.  To  reach his  wrestling
                                                                                    weight  of 140,  he had to drop 17  pounds
                                                                                   from his  normal weight of 157 .
                                                                                       It  was all  worth it to the teams who did
                                                                                   well.  The  varsity  team was  5-2,  and the
                                                                                   freshmen team was 4-2-2.  __/
