I WAS DIGGING A TRENCH WHEN
MY SHOVEL HIT THE LINE.
"I was digging a trenc h at a new construction site when my shovel hit a 480-volt
temporary power line . I saw an incredibly bright fiash - like I was looking right into the
sun - and then the electrical explosion knocked me backward a good 15 to 20 feet .
The electric current had gone from the shovel blade, through my boot and out through
a finger on the other hand. When I got up my boot was still smoldering and a piece of
the molten shovel blade was stuck to the wall behind me.
"I was wearing a short-sleeve shirt so my arms and hands were badly burned
from the flash . My foreman took me to EmergiCare. The staff started treating
my bums right away, put in an IV and hooked me up to a heart monitor.
After they ran some lab tests , they sent me to the hospital in an ambulance
just to be sure I was going to be all right .
"I was on a monitor in the hospital for three days, but luckily
there was no damage to my heart. I went back to EmergiCare
every day for a week after that to have my dressings changed.
They were just great to me."
