To create Alphabet City, MN worked through objections and snow.
How do you meas ure a yea r? Ask yourse lf. MN students meas ured it in
grades, energy drinks and relationships. Rent: School Editi on tells the still
relatable story of eight fri ends' journey through one yea r.
After its ann ounce ment, it was chall enged by parents and students alike
because of content. Despite the edited sc hool version, directors Mark
Hawkins and S cott Dugda le worked to further cut the scr ipt.
"I'm glad Mr. Hawkins and our ad ministration fought for and gra nted
us the opportunity because I have grown not only as a performer, but as a
perso n," senior Tiffany Taylor sa id.
Rega rdless of the changes, nothing could get past their want to develop;-
characters and bui ld sets. Except the six snow days MPS experienced .
Th ose six snow days translated into two weeks of missed rehea rsa l time.
"W e had extra time built into our schedule, but that was used up by six
ridicul ous snow days so we had to come in on Saturdays and Sundays and
stay late on so me weeknights," se nior Dan Kelly sa id.
While those on stage are eas il y remembered, it should also be noted that
the set, as se ni or David Kalis described it, "Was fantastic."
A member of the construction and tec hnician crew, junior Shelbi Kyler
was a part of the students responsible for building a 16 foot tall wall com-
plete with a fire escape, railings and graffiti.
"We were able to do so mething creative that didn't in volve a saw or a
drill," Kyler sa id.
With a principle cas t of mostl y se niors, the crew and cast connected over
the th emes sung and the life lesso ns prese nted.
