Cokes Create
Team Incentive
By Bob Scott
T
he Millard North boys golf
team held tryouts for four
days at Skyline Golf Course.
The golf team had its usual large
turnout, and from the turnout
emerged the top ten. These ten
made the team, coached by Mr.
Kevin Riley .
The practices were then
moved to the Knolls Golf Course.
These were held not only to gain
skills , but also to determine posi-
tion on the team. Senior John
Young finished tenth after the four
days of tryouts, taking the last
position. Through determination
and hard work, Young worked his
way up the ladder. By the end of
the year, Young had worked his
way up to the second position on
the team.
During these practices a
beating game was devised to put
some pressure on the"t>layers. This
game consisted of seven players.
The top three scorers would buy
the bottom three scores. The
middle score would remain idle.
Before stepping on the first tee,
everyone knew who one of the
players would be that bought
Cokes. Coach Riley had a record
of Cokes lost 49 - Cokes won 1.
" It's tough standing over a two-
foot putt knowing that if you
make it you beat Coach Riley ,"
said Sophomore John Scott. Riley
commented on his record as
"coincidence".
" The boys golf team was
hampered by the poor spring
weather. Several Duals , including
the Omaha South and Millard
South dual were cancelled due to
snow, and set to a later date. The
team, despite the weather, fin-
ished with a solid dual record of
5-2-1 . One of the reasons for the
strong record in duals, was the
Knolls Course itself. The Knolls is
extremely tight, with out-
of-bounds an water flanking most
of the fairways. Playing on the
course every day was a big
advantage to the team.
Junior Brad Lindal led the
team to 3rd place finish in districts
and 12th place finish at state.
Brad posted a 75 at metro to
place him fifth, along with a 76 at
state that also placed him fifth. "It
was a satisfying season, but I am
looking forward to next year,"
said Lindal.
