Basics survive budget cuts
hen the word academics is heard, what goes through

the mind? - long lectures. six page worksheets. note
taking. reading, essay, or book reports?
Classroom work wasn't all pencils, papers, and books.
Students in Descriptive Chemistry baked a cake without the
use of heat. Adult Living classes had the taste of married life
and a hand at child cgre. Human Physiology students learned
how to dissect rats, while Sociology students learned about
death and dying with a helpful field trip to a mortuary.
However the cold reality of ten page term papers and
cramming to study for finals. made the meaning of academics
a little more clearer. Research Methods was a notorious culprit
for doing just that. Students had to write two major term papers
along with two article analysis. all due in one semester.
An additional class was added to the curriculum. Civics and
Consumerism would only be offered to seniors as a new
graduation requirement. This class was designed to obtain
knowledge and skills necessary to become a concerned and
active citizen in a democratic society.
Accompanying the addition of this one class. came the
dropping of nine other classes due to budget cuts. They
included: Advanced Reading, Reading 1. Reading 2. General
Aviation. Government, Advanced Shorthand. Advanced:
Pottery, Jewelry and Lapidary, and Interpersonal Communica-
tions.
Although these classes will be cut from next year's
curriculum. note taking, log worksheets. and surprise pop
familiar sight for IBS students at Sympathizing with the problem is quizzes will still be a necessity felt by teachers.
