W hen that alarm blares off at 4:45 on
                a blustery, cold, November morning
the last thing anyone would think of
doing is jumping into the water for an hour
and a half work out. Everyone, that is, except
for a small, select group of enduring
individuals -· the Mustang's swim team.
           The team's practices were from 5:30 -
7:00 everyday before school, then again after
school from 3:30 - 5:30. What a day! But all
the hard work and endless hours of practice
       definitely paid off-for the swimmers.
The entire team was able to attend and
to participate in the State Meet, which was
held at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in
Lincoln. The girls team showed the other
schools that the Mustangs were on the right
track by placing an overall second in the
meet. The Medley Relay team consisting of
Lori Ried(ll), Laura Loll(9), Jenny Gabriel-
son(lO), and Julie Beckman(12) took first
place. The boys also placed sixth. Joe
        Petty(12), Kevin Kearns(ll), and Brad
Reynolds(12) were high placers on the boys
        team.
One of the highlights of a big meet was •
the shaving of the swimmers head, arms, legs,
and even backs for both boys and girls to help
cut down on water resistance. Swimmers
often wore more than one suit at practices for
this same purpose when meets came. Junior
Bobbie Johnson stated, "I think the shaving
is more psychological than anything, but it's
        a lot of fun."
