with Emotion
·T
he girls track season was one 'of many
emotions. "Exciting, happy, and
proud," were all words coach Paul
Sanders used to describe the season.
Excitement arose from the number of
girls who qualified for state. The school sent
girls to fill eleven positions. That was twice the
average five.
A dual with Millard South brought the hap-
piest moment. The girls won the dual, a head
to head competition, for the second year in
a row.
However, Sanders said, "Our proudest
moment came when we ran well at district. We
hoped to carry it over to state." They had sev-
eral reasons to be proud. They sent three relay
teams for the first time, and mile relay team
set a district record of 4:04.11.
When the team·got to state they placed
13 out of 24 teams. They received sixth place
in the 400 meter relay, third in the 1600 meter
relay, and fourth in the 3200 meter relay. In
addition, Freshman Tina Melander, Sopho-
more Kim Ostronic, Freshman Jill Jackes, and
Senior Debra Eickholt set a district record in
the 1600 meter relay. A school record was set
in the 400 meter relay by Melander, Sophmore
Tammy Sedlacek, Senior Lara Trout, and
Jackes.
The girls also ran well up to districts. They
ranked in the top ten in Nebraska for both the
3200 meter relay and the 1600 meter relay.
The girls' skills steadily increased
throughout the season, due partially to the
large number of senior girls. Although they will
lose these girls, the team still has a large pool
of talent to draw on next year. IN
