·Own Trivia
When students entered their sci-
trivial to an outsider; however, they were I
ence classes, they often had little idea of
the amount of information the department
had to take into consideration. There were
several facts which might have seemed
vital to a smooth running science class .
One item the department had to con- I
sider was replacements. Over the course
of the year, students broke an average of
400-500 test tubes. They consumed about I
ten cases of paper towels, that is 120 rolls .
In addition, teachers who had not switched
totally to overheads, used about one case
of chalk.
Another important area to be consid-
ered was the lab animals which were used
---- species which were examined by the stu-
for disection. There were eight diferent
;
dents including: clams, worms, crayfish, star
fish, grasshoppers, perch, and frogs. In ad-
dition. the human physiology classes alone
used about 80 rats. When asked what was
used to cover the smell of all the dissections
department head Tom Rezac jokingly re-
plied," We try to schedule classes so the
kids come in from gym. Then they don't no-
tice."
In addition to the kids , the science de-
partment had to keep track of their teach-
ers . Fourteen teachers on staff combined
to teach about 113 different groups of kids .
Some of those were yearlong classes, but
many were semester classes.
The popularity of those classes differed
greatly. Cell biology was a required class
for all students, so it had the highest enroll-
ment of about 250 students. At the other
end, Science Research I only had an enroll-
ment of 12. All of those different classes

teachers were able to offer the students a
good science education. As Rezac said,
"We'd put it up against any school in the
area." _/
