Pajamas, hats, and large crowds wear-
ing black were some of the sights to be seen
during Spirit Week, which began Sept. 17.
Students were given the opportunity to di s- •
play their school spirit in different ways :
ranging from Come As You Are Day to •
•
Mood Day to College Day. · •
On Spirit Day the pep rally was •
held at 2:30 in the gym, instead of in the :
morning. "The changes were made in the •
pep rally due to the mi sconduct by '93 :
seniors. A committee of teachers, parents •
•
and two students recommended that the pep •
rally be optional, and only a half an hour in •

order to reduce class rivalry," said Vice :
In past years, the Senior Class Board :
had been in charge of the pep rallies, but •
because of the early Homecoming date, the :
board had not been elected. Therefore, •
Student Council was asked to run the pep :
rally. "At first Student Council was going •
to decline because if we could not uphold the •
•
MN tradition of pep rallies, then we were not •
going to participate," said Sophomore Kelly •
•
Alsup. However, in a meeting with some •
•
• ~heerleaders and student council members, •
•
• both groups decided to participate.
• On the other hand, some.students •
• •
• decided not to go to the pep rally or partici- •
• pate in school spirit. "School spirit was an •
: imaginary bond created to put 2,000 people :
• who hate each other in the same room. The •
• • •
• pep rally promoted separatton between •
• cliques," said Senior Aaron McKain. Other •
students said Spirit Week in general was
unnecessary. "The week was really just
getting excited about being popular. There
are too many people in the school who hate
each other for the idea of school spirit to
work," said Senior Jamie Coughlin.
However, some students still be-
lieved in the need for Spirit Week. "It
helped make the student body like our school
more. What was needed was to have every-
one participate and support our school," said
Senior Molly McClu re.
Despite the controversy about the
tior Beth Wood paint s Senior Alex Herr's face black with pep rally and Spirit Week, students had
~ paint so he can show hi s class spirit. Seniors wore black
the day of the pep rall y and Class Color Day. (Kent many cltances to show their school spirit.e
