C ould we please have two
separate checks?"
This might've sounded
like a pretty strange question
coming from a couple on prom
night, but many students seemed to
agree that going Dutch to prom
would've been a good idea.
It was easy to see why prom
was so expensive. For the girl it
wasn't so bad; she spent between
$40 and $60 for her dress and
another $5-$10 on flowers. But for
the guy it was a different story. Forty
to fifty dollars was spent on renting
a tuxedo, dinner cost anywhere
from $20-$60 depending on the
restaurant, flowers were another
$15-$20, and the ticket was $10.
As Junior Connor McCarthy put
it, "The amount of money spent on
prom was inflated by students." This
was indeed true. The students
expected the guys to wear a
tuxedo because it was always done
that way, but a suit would have
looked just as nice. Many students
did not go to prom because they
could not afford it. If everyone didn't
• need to spend as much money as
• was spent, more people would have
• been able to go and enjoy it.
Aside from the cost, most
students agreed with Junior Susan
Cameron, "Prom -was a night to
remember."
