11 1 hat was that!? To an innocent by-
W
stander, it may have seemed like
a reminiscent "rapper" from the
breakdancing era.
Actually it
was a part of Junior Jay Gallentine's entertain-
ment speech for forensics.
Gallentine's "The Decline of Breakdan-
cing" was one of the approximately 115 award-
winning deliveries given by the 36 forensic
team members. The team won seven Sweep -
stakes Awards out of the .23 various tourna-
ments they attended, included was the Dis-
trict One-Act Play Contest where they re-
ceived the district trophy, and the State Play
Contest where they were named state runner-
up.
"The success we had came from a lot of
hard work and self discipline," said Coach
Terry Peterson when asked about the squad's
winning season. "Balance between experi-
ence and new, freshly skilled students, and be-
tween high and low points is key to our suc-
cess," continued Peterson.
One definite high point of the season was
when three students were honored at The Na-
tional Forensics league Qualifying T ourna-
ment. Senior Greg Brown and Junior Jeff
Bivens were finalists, and Junior Jenny Peter-
son was one of three Nebraskans to qualify to
compete in the national tournament held in
Cincinnati, Ohio. "It really felt great to
break nationals after practicing that much,"
she said.
Bivens concluded that the thing that was
the most fun about his experience with the
speech team was performing. "I loved hav-
ing total control over an audience. It was fun
to have everyone's eyes on me," he laughed.
Brown added that "it wasn't easy, but it was
a challenge. It was an interesting way to
make friends and learn self-discipline at the
same time."
From entertainment, as in Gallentine's
"rap-attack," to informative, as in an oratory
over world events, balancing the variety of
key items involved in making a forensics
squad a success took time and energy. Ac-
cording to Senior Robyn Bradsby, though, "It
was all worth it." tN
