Omahans created history by recalling
Mayor Mike Boyle. Citizens felt that he was
immature and these feelings escalated when
Boyle fired Chief of Police Robert Wadman.
Petitions began circulating the previous sum-
mer and a group called "Citizens for Mature
leadership" worked night and day to get
Boyle out of office. On January 13, 1987, a re-
cord number of voters turned out at the polls
and made the decision to recall the mayor by
a 56 to 44 percent margin. City Council Presi-
dent Bernie Simons was elected as the new
mayor by his colleagues.-
gate, President Reagan and the White House
staff were accused of selling arms to the Irani-
ans and using the profits to support the Con-
tras in Nicaragua. John Poindexter, head of
the National Security Council, and Colonel Oli-
ver North (pictured here) were blamed for the
transfer of illegal funds. Both, however, plead-
ed the fifth amendment when questioned.
Senator John Tower of Texas headed up a Sen-
ate investigation committee which looked
into the scandal.
Racial unrest continued to be the predom-
inant headline coming out of South Africa. The
problem of Apartheid tore at the world as
countries chose sides as to whether sanctions
would be imposed or not. This occurred as
Blacks were pushed into camps that the op-
pressive White government deemed
"Homelands."
The entertainment
felt the loss of several important figures. lib-
erace, Ted Knight, and Cary Grant all died and
left many saddened fans across the country
and the world. Also, Designer Perry Ellis set
back the world of fashion when he died at the
age of 46.
