oday's high schoolers are
influenced by what they
see. and last year many
things emerged that high
schoolers noticed.
People are often looked
up to and there have been
plenty of people to keep an
eye on. The two people in the
news the most were Princess
Diana and Prince Charles of
Great Britain, first with their
marriage and then with the
announcement of their baby.
The world lost a leader in
the pursuit of peace when
Egyptian President Anwar
Sad at was killed in October.
Both Ronald Reagan and
House Speaker Tip O'Niell tried
to keep our economy from
going over the hill, while Britain
and Argentina went over the
hill with their war.
The United States stepped
up their support to the govern-
ment in El Salvador and mar-
shal law was declared in
Poland.
In April the National Nu-
clear Freeze Association held
a Ground Zero Week to
educate people on the
world's nuclear arms build up.
One of the great comics
of our time, John Belushi died
in Los Angeles at the age of
33. While in Kansas City, many
people died when two sky-
walks fell onto a dance floor
of the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
Entertainment was given
us by the movie "Porky's"
which proved to be a big hit,
but "Chariots of Fire" won the
best movie and Henry Fonda
and Kathryn Hepburn earned
the Best Actor and Actress
Awards for their performance
in "On Golden Pond".
Garfield and Strawberry
Shortcake could be seen on
everything from clothes to
posters and food. :
And even Ann Landers
made news with her repeated
advice columns.
However, even though
good and bad newsmakers
grabbed our attention. A mer-
• icons were still able to enjoy
the democratic freedoms!
