The Ghost of
MN Spirit
Revived
-Steve Van Buren-
Walking down the solemn, tired hall-
ways of the school was a thin g of the past. No
longer was it a ghost town of school spirit. The
student council added, subtracted, and revised
the year's events to cater to fellow students .
It wasn 't a magic word or a spell that
the council used. Much time in brain storming
and planning were required to bring the out-
comes that the students saw. Planning for
Homecoming and Spirit Week was done
throughout the summer and into the fall.
President Tris Jacob believed that
the excitement of Spirit Week and Homecom-
ing set the stage for the year. "This good start
'pumped' us up for the whole year, and I think
we were able to maintain the excitement
throughout the rest of the year."
With the amount of people and the
amount of time they spent together in planning
and construction , one might think that getting
something done would be next to impossible.
However, according to Senior Brian Burger,
it was quite the opposite. "I thought that each
member of the council was very willing to co-
operate. We all had one goal in common: to
help the student body have an enjoyable school
year that they could remember."
The council had help from their new
sponsor Kara Smith . Last year Smith spent
time observing how the group worked. This
helped her this year with adjusting to her new
position because most of the adjusting was
already done.ยท Smith sai d, "I usually let the
president do her job while I sat in the back
making sure everything stayed on track."
One thing in particular that Smith
noticed about the members was the attention
they gave to what was going on in their society.
The council developed their recently
formed courtesy committee which handled such
things as memorial funds and birthday cards
for students.
The council also as a whole spon-
sored an Omaha family during the holidays
and gave turkey and ham to the Open Door
Mission for Thanksgiving.
